where do the educator and the storyteller meet?

The etymology of the word educate is to lead out something that is inside. Isn´t that the path of a story that is told from the storyteller´s heart?

Throughout history, human beings tell stories and through them they transmit wisdom, ethical and esthetical values, knowledge. Telling and listening to stories mobilizes questions and reflections, broadens frontiers and cultural references, expands symbolic repertoire and excites imagination. Traditional stories are an ancient technology, and at the same time they are extremely up-to-date. They are tools that link different areas of knowledge. Above all, stories are maps that guide our existence.

That is why, whenever we tell and listen to a story, we are, somehow, educating. That is why to educate and to narrate go hand in hand.

However, challenges abound for the educator-storyteller and the practice of narration in schools. In order to make storytelling a meaningful and the most possible fertile experience, it is necessary to prepare the educator – one must be close to this profound and ancient language. A preparation that sprouts from noticing, from a sensible and attentive eye to the stories.

possible activities:

  • The art of noticing stories: traditional oral tales in school and the preparation of the educator-storyteller

  • a path along the landscapes, images and metaphors of a tale, with expressive exercises and theoretical-poetical references in order to investigate traditional stories

  • Storytelling session and a talk about traditional tales

  • Storytelling session for the school community

  • A house made of words: pleasure and the importance of storytelling – for mothers, fathers, grandparents and caretakers

  • Consulting and development of projects with traditional oral stories
